Why Ed Tech?
I grew up in a community that was mainly populated by first-generation immigrants from the middle east, specifically Yemen. Yemen is a very under-developed country, including technologically, so most of the parents and adults in my community when I was growing up there had little to no experience with technology. My middle school was one of the more fortunate schools in our district when it came to technology, so there came a HUGE gap between the technological knowledge we had versus the knowledge our parents had. It is SO important that parents with children in school understand how to use the technology they are using for safety reasons and for the sake of being able to understand and assist their child through their educational processes. With that being said, I have a strong passion for empowering first-generation Americans in STEM and providing resources and opportunities to grow with technology, especially in less-fortunate and/or minority/POC communities where knowledge gaps exist.
I was blessed to be apart of a community that so strongly supports technological literacy and offers tools and safe spaces for students to be able to utilize technology. The Salina Community Center was built while I was in elementary school and is a full computer lab and study area that is open to all students after school to be able to utilize the computers and internet, books, and tutoring services. Additionally, ACCESS (https://www.accesscommunity.org/) does a lot of work in the community with promoting technology, encouraging STEM programs and providing afterschool enrichment related to STEM in K-12 schools in Dearborn. The support of my community has inspired my educational and career choices.
Because of where I grew up, I am able to understand both the struggle of a digital divide and also the impact that technology can make on a community. I am passionate about providing opportunities for learning in places that aren't so hard to reach and am empowered to work to de-stigmatize the current educational system so that a future society can acknowledge skills and be aware of the resources that exist to knowledge-seekers.
