Stitching the Gap
2026
Air Dry Clay, Acrylic Paint
This piece is part of a three-piece set focused on health disparities in the United States. It is a mid-sized pinch pot created out of air dry clay with a crack down the side and small strips of clay acting as "stitches". It was then painted with red acrylic and glazed. Each piece represented a different health disparity, this one represents the gaps in the healthcare system and the people that have fallen through, unable to receive care. This was represented by the large crack running down the side the pot which was intentionally shaped to appear fractured and imperfect, much like our system. The "stiches" running up the gap serve to half heartedly repair it even though it is still visibly broken, damaged, and not functional like the policies made to overlook so much of out population in need. I used a pinch pot method to create the base of the pot, and clay tools to cut a wedge out of the side as well as the strips that were to be used as stitches. I then scored and slipped around the cut and placed the stitches over the gap.
