These performances were so beautiful and entrancing.
My Individual project is the orange bag on the left!
I would like to think I have grown as a person this semester. Experiencing college for the first time was challenging, and I still think I need more time to adjust to changing circumstances. One constant I had this year that has developed into something more important to me is Art Scholars.
In the first semester it didn’t feel as if I had any connections to the program other than attending events. Now I have felt more comfortable with those involved in the program, because I understand that they genuinely care about their students. It became natural to converse with Harold and Heather, free of judgment because I got over the fear of approaching authority figures. They are strong mentors to have as we progress as sophomores, and I feel they are my greatest connection. With faculty members outside of Arts Scholars, there is still a disconnect between me fostering relationships. There are short semesters where once the classes end, I do not have the means to contact faculty. In clubs I have joined, there haven’t been faculty members sponsoring activities, so I have not had opportunities to pursue stronger relationships with them. This is something that I can improve on in the future, and for incoming students, I suggest they find these connections through extracurricular activities. This allows better communication and constant relationships through multiple semesters.
Other students had constant exposure to one another living in the same halls, easily finding activities near Cambridge Community, and overall enjoying each other’s company. I didn’t have that, especially because during our Colloquium, we didn’t have much opportunity to speak with other students than in our original groups. In the spring, however, with our nested workshops, I found students with similar interests to mine as well as those in my major to which I can bond with. One student in particular is a talented crocheter, and I have connected with her to discuss different techniques, ask for advice, and learn more about her work. She makes me feel more involved with Arts scholars, and more comfortable overall. Other students help me realize that I am not alone in my challenges balancing this program and other responsibilities. For incoming students, I highly recommend finding people you enjoy speaking with and spending time with, as people are what make college worthwhile. Take the first step, reach out, and be yourself. Take advantage of what Scholars and campus has to offer.
Arts Scholars as an LLC definitely brings students together with a common group, allowing them to actively interact with one another on a daily basis. As someone not living in the scholars dorms, I find community in our artistic activities. For example, the Arts Advisory Board holds events for students to socialize and try new things. These crafts are unfamiliar to me and others, so I find connections participating in these activities. We also have Service Day where all members of Scholars do community service. In the future I hope to be a mentor to other Art Scholars students and help the program flourish by assisting in larger events. I am glad to have these opportunities to try new things and help our community grow.
I never had an in depth experience with the arts as I have had with the Arts program. I’ve only been exposed to a few art forms, but now I see the diverse scope of artistic mediums. Mainly, I’ve learned about the role of art in relaxation, activism, community, and expression. Future scholars in this program will become more thoughtful as they ponder challenging questions and apply their knowledge to their own artwork. They can find and change their definition of art as they explore their interests and try new things.
This program had many benefits toward my learning and projects. The best parts were when I went on field trips, getting to choose which events I wanted to participate in and watching immersive performances. I also enjoyed the workshops because it provided me with a more intimate space where I was more comfortable expressing myself and communicating with others. I suggest that incoming Arts Scholars students be more open-minded with this program and participate in as many activities or events that are offered. Become more involved. They may find something they become passionate about, or have a memorable experience.
