NextNOW Fest- Silent DisGLO
Thursday, September 5, 2024 | 9PM-12AM at the Clarice Courtyard

This event showed me the diverse sets of musical alterations and styles of the DJs. There were three channels to connect to in our headphones, each owned by a separate artist. One was nostalgic and upbeat, another was mainly rap, and the last was anticipation-provoking instrumentals. I have a particular musical taste that I was seeking in this event, but I chose to listen to each style. The vast amount of participants at the Silent DisGLO made the night more exhilarating, allowing us to let go of our inhibitions and fully enjoy the music without the fear of judgment. The freedom to consume our desired art further provided a safe space to express ourselves in our choices. In our art colloquium, we have learned how art connects us to people through its interactivity, individuality, and subjectivity. This event touches on those concepts explored in class. The interactivity was through switching channels for different types of music, the individuality with which music we chose to listen to, and the subjectivity of how every participant had different perceptions of the music and the emotions evoked through each channel. Overall this event expanded my musical knowledge and allowed me to discover types of music I once thought I would not enjoy.
University of Maryland Art Gallery

During our research lecture in Colloquium, we learned about many art spaces on campus. I had never known of the Art Library or Art Gallery. I wanted to use this opportunity to visit someplace new. The Art Gallery at the Sociology Building looked to be a collection of student works. I perused the area and saw intriguing mediums. The two pieces that intrigued me the most were a wall piece made of Korean silk, meant to depict the map of the US air quality due to Canadian wildfire, and a video of waves accompanied by a soundtrack. I remember our class period on art activism, where we brainstormed ways to address global, state, and local issues. One was environmental, which the student who created a quilt based their art on. It creates an impactful representation that connects to the artist's culture and interests. Art Scholars develop a Capstone project that deals with similar ideas. Art like this helps me formulate my Capstone as I see examples that bridge self and society. The wave media had a calming effect, and the artist's background music choices helped contribute to that feeling. It was a serene and skillfully composed artwork, setting the tone for the rest of the exhibition. I am glad I visited and saw something inspiring. I may consider creating a tapestry piece using the same environmental topic as the quilt.
Arts Advisory Board Pumpkin Painting
Wednesday, October 23, 2024 | 7:30-9:00 PM in the Bel Air Lounge

In this event, participants were given decorative pumpkins to paint and customize. I found myself sitting there, surrounded by options, yet unsure what to do with my pumpkin. Despite having complete freedom and no expectations with this simple task, my mind went blank. I wanted my design to be unique and true to my own style, which reminded me of our Capstone, where we are working toward creating a large-scaled project that represents our values. During Colloquium, we read an article and watched a video about the creative process. What most stood out to me was the idea that creativity is within oneself, inborn, and needed to be explored through various means. The author suggested stepping out of our comfort zones by changing some aspect of the art we are comfortable with. Applying this suggestion, I tried using paint markers, and may have risked my final product. We also disscused how creative blocks are a normal part of the creative process, which was reassuring. While others seemed to know what they were creating, and had well crafted results, I felt a little less pressured to create something in time. This event showed me that I need to plan my artistic projects more thoughtfully to create something I am proud of. My Capstone project, in particular, would benefit from more refinement and a more organized approach of my ideas.
