This event was a yearly reception where student-submitted work is displayed at the Stamp Gallery. I visited to view my friend's sister's work and beside that was a selfie I took with a work called "Night and Day." This piece resonated with me the most because it depicted a culture I was familiar with. The clothing, colors, and patterns, are related to Indian culture. Although I am Nepali, it is nice to see some representation recognized. The artist created an intricate painting with layers of detail pleasing to the eye. I look at the style and see cave art. There is so much dimension to this piece. I am in a clay workshop this semester where we will create jewelry sets with a theme. I want to share my culture and family through my pieces, and this painting inspires me with color schemes or patterns I could use for my project. This event shows me that I should put myself out there. These students were confident enough to submit their work of their own volition to be shared with hundreds of people. I always doubt the quality of my work, and never think I produce any work that is worthy of an audience. The Arts Scholars Capstone project provides me an avenue to express myself and put myself out there, no matter if I am ready or not. I need to embrace this opportunity and be proud of my work.
Craft and Chat - Karaoke Night
Thursday March 12, 2025 | 6PM-7PM at Bel Air Lounge
#art #performance #singing #freedom #culture
This event had plenty of technical difficulties. We tried HDMI connections between several laptops with the Bel Air projector, but it was not working. Additionally, the laptop audio would not connect to the speaker. We had to make do with a smaller crowd, quiet audio, and a working microphone. Before this event, I had rehearsed and prepared a couple of songs I would be comfortable performing. I was initially apprehensive about attending the event, but I thought it would be a great opportunity to put myself out there and practice my public skills. I chose songs that I have a deep connection with, and sharing those with strangers was a vulnerable experience. Although we faced technical issues and limited attendees, this experience helped me step out of my comfort zone and accept the response of my audience. Some were uninterested, some were engaged, and some enjoyed my singing. In ArtsFest, I can anticipate attendees to receive my work both positively and negatively as it was received during Karaoke Night. People may not engage with my project, but that isn't a reflection of my work's quality. My Capstone idea is something I am proud of and what I want people to appreciate. It covers a vulnerable topic that is important to me, which I hope audiences can resonate with. I know I need to focus on refining my ideas through curation so I can present my best work.
Peer Mentor Zoom Hangout - Art Scholars Peer Mentors
Tuesday March 25, 2025 | 8PM-9PM on ZOOM

I became a peer mentor last semester, and my responsibilities included engaging with my mentees and providing guidance regarding Art Scholars or college. This event was to give freshmen the opportunity to learn about what it would be like as a Peer Mentor and ask any questions about sophomore capstone development and other concerns. We wanted to make any students considering becoming an Art Scholars Peer Mentor or those curious about sophomore's curriculum more comfortable as they approach a new year. There were 2 different sessions, one on Tuesday and Thursday, and I attended the Tuesday one. Although only a few students showed up, we created an open space to learn. Being a part of this event helped me reflect on all of my experiences as an Art Scholar and a Peer Mentor and eloquently communicate information. It made me consider time management the most. In class, we did project challenges, one of which was about time management. It would have been great to have that resource as I was beginning college because I have found that incredibly helpful to my work ethic. At this point in the semester, our Capstone Project is transitioning into the final stages, and I feel as if time is running out. I know I can succeed in meeting my goals by improving my time management, but I never anticipated I would be struggling to balance everything. This has taught me a lesson about my strengths and weaknesses, but ultimately, how to handle important projects among other tasks.
