For each class session, you will have the opportunity to earn 5 points per class session (15 points per week) for your overall in-class participation. In class, when working in groups or with a partner you are expected to interact in German. Speaking to classmates in English or not working on completing the assigned task in class will significantly hinder your ability to improve your language skills. See below the criteria that will be used to determine your daily participation grade.
5 points: always well-prepared; is eager to volunteer and attentive; uses German with classmates and instructor; completes each activity or exercise; shows resourcefulness and imagination when using the language; responds to and engages classmates in a respectful manner; remains critical and open-minded toward all cultures.
4 points: usually well-prepared; is attentive and volunteers occasionally; tries to use German with classmates and instructor; makes the most of each activity or exercise; completes activities and exercises with some imagination and resourcefulness; makes some effort to engage fellow students; shows some development of cultural sensitivity.
3 points: adequately prepared and attentive (often waits to be called upon); occasionally needs to be reminded to use German with instructor and classmates; responds and completes exercises with minimal imagination; does not engage classmates beyond the minimum requirements for an assignment.
2 points: is unprepared; makes little effort to participate or complete exercises; rarely tries to use German with instructor or classmates.
1 point: makes no contribution to class whatsoever and does not have a course book in class.
0 points: is absent from class. If you are absent, email a classmate to find out about missed work or homework.
