Yes, there may be times when you will need to access a computer. At this time, your iPad can either be docked with a computer to sync the apps and other files, or synchronised using iCloud. If synchronised using iTunes, the computer will serve as its backup device, its charging station and its management tool.
You are expected to back up your iPad daily ... or, at minimum, at least once each week.
Details about how to connect to the school’s wireless are provided in the "Joining the school network" section of this course. At home, your iPad should find your personal wireless network. You will need to know the password to connect to your personal wireless.
Once the wireless connections are made, the iPad will remember them and should locate the wireless seamlessly when you arrive at school or at home.
The iPad belongs to you. You own it and the Apps … and you manage it, including synchronising and backing up your data. However, you are expected to abide by the Unley High School Acceptable Use of Learning Technologies Policy which you and your parent signed at the start of your enrolment at Unley High School.
The iPad is covered by the standard Apple 12 Month Warranty, for any manufacturing problems. iPads purchased via the Apple Store are covered by the AppleCare+ Protection Plan for a total of 2 years if that option was selected.
We encourage you to contact your Home Insurance provider to ensure that the iPad is covered at home, in transit to and from school and at school.
Make sure that Find my iPad is turned on in your iPad Settings. You will find this option in the iCloud menu option which can be found down the left-hand side of the Settings screen. Data on the iPad exists either in the application that created it or in cloud-based storage facilities. Data in the cloud is backed up by the cloud server. Data on the device is backed up to the home computer whenever it is connected and synchronised.
Students are expected to back up their iPad and the data it stores every night.
This can be done by connecting the iPad to iTunes on the home computer every night, to ensure it is fully backed, up should any potential problems occur. Alternatively, use iCloud as your means of backing up data held on the iPad.
If the device needs to be replaced due to loss or damage, the backup on the home computer will ensure that the replacement device is a direct clone of the previous one.
The iPad MUST also be charged ready for the following day at school.
Printing from the iPad, at school, will not be possible. There are many Apps that allow printing from this device and reviews about these Apps can by found via a simple Google search. Remember, this device is designed to be a simple device to read on. Printing from the iPad is not necessary, as it has been from computers in the past. You will be submitting your work to your teachers in electronic formats. Should you need to print, you can email the document to yourself, log onto a school-computer and print from there.
Absolutely allowed and encouraged! The iPad is a personal user device. It will be the tool to assist your learning. We anticipate you will choose from a selection of Apps that you prefer for many of the basic uses of the device.
You are encouraged to try out and use different Apps. Part of the learning involved in the use of the iPad, is in the literacy of technical choice. You will learn how to select the best App for a given task. The best App will be the one that best meets your needs at the time. Naturally, subject teachers will also specify Apps that best meet their curriculum needs. Any Apps purchased are your property. Apps are often free, others range in cost, on average, from 99c to $14.99.
