There are lots of resources available on the Internet that can get you started and take you on a learning journey from iPad basics to iPad expert. Beginning on their first day at Unley High School, students and teachers are supported by our IT Support Team. Additionally, each year we run a series of iPad Basics workshops for parents. Watch the school website and newsletter for notification of these events. In the meantime, here are a number of links to get you started.
When you purchase and register a new iPad running iOS13, the iLife (iMovie, GarageBand) and iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) suite of Apps are available FREE from the App Store. This is a considerable saving for our students, as all of these Apps are mandatory and are required for use across all areas of the curriculum.
When you set up your new iPad and connect to the App Store, these apps will be automatically downloaded to your iPad.
If you have chosen to use an older iPad model, then you may be required to purchase the iLife (iMovie, GarageBand) and iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) suite of Apps from the App Store. The approximate cost $60.95.
The Apps listed and linked below must be purchased and downloaded, ready for Day 1, for use in learning areas across the curriculum.
Subject specific apps will be rolled out to the students as required by each subject learning area. Students will be advised of any free Apps required by learning areas. In the event that a subject teacher requests students to download a particular free App, it is an expectation that students will follow the teacher's direction and download the App accordingly. This will me that they will need to know their Apple ID's and be able to download Apps themselves.
We recommend buying App Store & iTunes Gift Cards rather than linking the iPad to your own credit card so that the student has limited credit for their use if they need to purchase apps.
On the first day of the new school year, the only students on site are those in Years 8 and 12. A special induction program is provided for the Year 8 students and they are supported through this process and all activities on the day by their Home Group's Peer Support Team (a team of Year 11 students who work closely with the Home Group for the first semester).
The IT Support team will work to ensure all Year 8 students, who have returned their signed Acceptable use of Learning Technologies Policy, successfully join the Unley High School network using their own iPads.
On Day 1 of the school year, you will be assisted through an automated process of joining the school's network by the IT Support Team. This automated process creates a number of quick links to specific sites that you will need during your learning, as well as the school's Learner Management System and Email. Our aim is to have all newly enrolled students on the network and accessing their email by the end of the day. This means that teaching and learning, using the iPad, can start straight away in each subject area.
You need to physically be on the school grounds to join the school's network. However, before you can join, a number of things need to have happened.
In your enrolment pack, provided on the Information Evening in November (or posted home if you did not attend) there are two very important forms that you must read carefully, sign and return to the school as quickly as possible. They are:
• The Unley High School Acceptable Use of Learning Technologies Policy
• The Network User Information Sheet
It is a Department For Education (DFE) requirement that all students and their caregivers sign the Acceptable Use of Learning Technologies Policy before the student is permitted to access learning technologies on any Department School site. Once your User Agreement and Network User Information Sheet are received and processed, a member of the IT Support team will create your network and email accounts so that they are ready for access on the first day of school in January. However, if you leave it until school starts at the end of January to return your forms, your access will be delayed until the paperwork is processed and your network and email accounts are created.
