Planning Breaks

A brain or body break is just what it sounds like: a break from whatever kids are focusing on, providing a chance to reset!

  • Taking short breaks during learning has been shown to have real benefits to learning outcomes

  • These quick rests from learning can help to reduce stress and frustration, while also helping to increase attention and productivity

Some things to consider when planning breaks:

  • Try not to stick to scheduled times of day for breaks, instead, take them before fatigue, distraction or frustration set in

  • Some students may benefit from interval breaks (work for 5 minutes, break for 2 minutes), while older students may benefit from taking a break once a certain task has been completed

You know your child best!

  • Take note of how long they are typically able to stay focused on a task, and set a timer for a minute or two less

  • Active body breaks can be very helpful for some kids, but breaks don’t always have to be active

      • Relaxing or quiet activities can be helpful, especially for kids who can become overstimulated by physical activity
