Planning Breaks
A brain or body break is just what it sounds like: a break from whatever kids are focusing on, providing a chance to reset!
Taking short breaks during learning has been shown to have real benefits to learning outcomes
These quick rests from learning can help to reduce stress and frustration, while also helping to increase attention and productivity
Some things to consider when planning breaks:
Try not to stick to scheduled times of day for breaks, instead, take them before fatigue, distraction or frustration set in
Some students may benefit from interval breaks (work for 5 minutes, break for 2 minutes), while older students may benefit from taking a break once a certain task has been completed
You know your child best!
Take note of how long they are typically able to stay focused on a task, and set a timer for a minute or two less
Active body breaks can be very helpful for some kids, but breaks don’t always have to be active
Relaxing or quiet activities can be helpful, especially for kids who can become overstimulated by physical activity
