Graphs are an effective way of representing data. But they are only useful if you know how to read them. You'll find some resources here that will help you learn how to read graphs. There is also an evaluation sheet that has a bunch of questions to help you determine whether the graph is useful and fairly represents the data. There will also be a section to help you determine whether a graph is possibly mis-representing the data or exaggerating it in some way.
