  • Homefun

  • Consonant Explanation

  • Vowel Explanation

  • Curriculum Unit

  • Tutoring

Homefun (120 points)

In order to give you more practice on the concepts covered in the course, you will complete a variety of application and critical thinking activities at home. One will be due each week during Weeks 2-13. Each homefun is worth 10 points towards your final grade. These homefuns will be announced in class at the beginning of each week in which they are due. If you miss that day in class, be sure to contact me to get the instructions.

Consonant Explanation (120 points)

Consonants can be tricky because of how they can change based on their environment. To prepare you to teach this concept, you will create a student-friendly visual explanation of a consonant allophone and its use. This visual explanation should be on that could be used in an ESL Pronunciation course. More information about this assignment will be available on Canvas at the beginning of the Consonant Module.

Vowel Explanation (120 points)

Vowels are notoriously difficult for learners of English to hear and pronounce for a number of reasons. In order to prepare you to teach them, you will create a visual explanation of a specific vowel contrast of your choosing that explain the contrast in a learner friendly manner. More information about this assignment will be available on Canvas at the beginning of the Vowel Module.

Curriculum Unit (240 points)

In order to give you practice designing pronunciation and listening comprehension lessons, you will create 2-day unit of lesson plans covering a topic of your choice for a learner population of your choice. More information about this assignment will be available on Canvas later in the semester.

tutoring (400 points)

In order to help develop your knowledge of phonetics skills teaching phonetics for listening/speaking, you will work with a tutee throughout the semester. This multi-part learning task will take you through assessing student listening and/or pronunciation priorities, preparing instructional content, tutoring your tutee, and reflection on the experience while it is going on and after it is done. More information about this assignment will be available on Canvas later in the semester.
