"Sunlight is like the breath of life to the pomp of autumn."
-Nathaniel Hawthorn
The Sun emits 3.8 x 10^26 joules of energy every second! Here on Earth, we do not receive all of the Sun's energy. The Sun's energy travels through space in the form of Light to the surrounding areas.
Every organism relies on the Sun's light, whether it be for sight, warmth, energy, photosynthesis, or more. Even the organisms that live in caves and deep-sea trenches benefit from the Sun's energy!
We as humans, use sunlight to synthesis Vitamin D, green plants and microbes use it to undergo photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis is the process of using light, water, and Carbon dioxide to produce glucose and Oxygen.

In this video, we will discuss the importance of the Sun in our ecosystem and our soil's ecosystem.
We will briefly discuss what light is and its role in photosynthesis. We will break down the organelles involved in photosynthesis alongside its reactants and products of this as well.
Below you will find the vocabulary terms for this section.
The process of using Light, water and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and glucose. Takes place within the chlorophyll , which is found in the chloroplast , in plants in microbes.
Green pigment responsible for absorbing light for photosynthesis
Organelle that houses chlorophyll, stoma and lumen. Place where photosynthesis takes place.
Simple 6 carbon sugar. Stores energy within its chemical bonds.
Electromagnetic radiation from the Sun. Usually experienced as thermal energy or heat.
This fun arts-and--craft project will demonstrate the needs of a plant.
DIY Know and Show Sombrero
Materials
· 2 Large, Square Sheets of Newspaper
· Brightly Colored paper
· Balloon
· Pen/Pencil
· Feathers
· Pipe cleaners
Procedures
1) Make a list of 3-5 things needed for plants to grow
2) With your parent,s help, place the 2 newspapers on a round surface about the size of your head.
3) Tape the newspaper around the round surface to make the bottom of the hat.
4) Curl the excess newspaper around the taped region to form the brim.
5) Decorate your sombrero with your balloon, pen sketches, feathers, and pipe cleaner.
Each decoration represents a different need for the plant. A plant needs water, air, light, and soil to live and thrive.
