An Introduction to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Strand (STEM)
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is one of the strands that is offered in Senior High School in the Philippines. It introduces learners to four interconnected disciplines which are the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The strand will help student to prepare in their college degrees that focus on perplexity of an intrinsic world for future scientist, doctors, engineers, and mathematicians. The importance of this strand help the learners to engage and improve their thinking, skills and ability in solving simple to complex problems of society through conducting researches and analyzing data with integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. With this strand, the student will nourish their skills and creativity as they will come up in ideas and innovations that may help the society.
Here is what you will expect in entering this strand:
You will often do participate in an experiments and projects that can gain you knowledge in the concepts of sciences, technology, engineering, and foundation of mathematics.
You will do researches incorporating the use of scientific inquiry or questioning that will help in forming the hypothesis, experiments, prototypes, and conclusion.
You will study the field of technology such as Information Communications and Technology, Multimedia, Media Information Literacy, Robotics, Programming, etc.
You will learn the concept and principles of Mathematics such as Calculus and Statistics that will help you in improving your skills and able to apply the foundation of Mathematics in modern real world scenarios and problems.
STEM Strand establishes its goals in fostering and improving overall skills of the students. Here are the targets that it aims:
1. Prepare them in their college degree and future career - Just like other strands, STEM are pre-requisite of students who will study the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, building a strong foundation in said interconnected disciplines.
2. Improve the critical and inquiring minds of students - The learners will expect that in the future, they will be the one who will address the global challenges that we suffer therefore, STEM enhances the thinking of students by giving problems that will help them to analyze the information, and make solutions with right decisions.
3. Nurture the problem-solving skills of students - As the description above states, this strand helps the students on how they should approach the problems they may encounter. Through proper reasoning, conducting a research and designing a prototype experiments, they can nourish the skills of solving a problem.
4. Fostering the creativity and innovation - Students can develop new innovations and explore new ideas that can contribute to the society.
5. Improve Technology Literacy - STEM aims to teach students on how to use properly the technology in this time as the world is technology-driven nowadays.
6. Develop a good communication skills - Students of STEM are honed their communication skills through collaborating in a group project, experiments, research by articulating ideas, brainstorming. This will prepare them for successful interactions in the setting of their future endeavors.
In Philippines, as per the Deped Order No.8 Series of 2015 (Policy Guidelines on Classroom Assessment for the K-12 Basic Education Program), the subjects offered in senior high school are categorized as core, applied, and specialized. Specialized subjects are the subjects you can only find in the specific strand. Somewhat, they are similar to the major subjects as they are the concentrated or focused subjects in each strand.
In STEM Strand, these are the list of major or specialized subjects that students will take:

3. General Chemistry 1
4. General Chemistry 2
5. General Biology 1
6. General Biology 2
7. General Physics 1
8. General Physics 2
9. Research/Capstone Project
