I had the pleasure of attending the Fashion Institute of Technology(FIT) during my junior year of college. The Fashion Institute of Technology is a prestigious fashion school and it has always been my dream to attend this school. Because of this, I was very excited to be at FIT for a full academic year. I had the pleasure of living in Manhattan and being able to experience city life, which was very exciting. Academically, I learned so many rewarding things that I know I will use within my lifetime in the fashion industry. I admired that during my time at FIT, I took strictly fashion courses. I loved this aspect because it made me feel as though I was able to focus solely on the field I wanted to pursue my whole life. I took several courses that truly pushed me academically and creatively. I was able to learn about several fibers that are used in fashion in my textile course titled TS111. I designed a whole collection of clothing in my AR101 course, which was an art elective. Also, I was able to learn about important retail math formulas such as average markups, cumulative markups, the skeletal system, and much more in my FM224, Retail Math course. In my FM225, Fashion Merchandising course, I learned multiple things about the merchandising environment and what being apart of a merchandising team entails. One cool assignment I had in this course was creating an ad for a known brand. In my FM117 course, Fashion Marketing, I learned many things regarding the business of fashion. I learned about the SWOT Analysis and its importance, along with the BCG Growth-Share Matrix. I completed many case studies on known brands and created a brand extension for a fashion company for my final project. In my FASH244 course, Product Development, I learned more about all of the components that went into constructing a garment and created a spring collection for Zara as my final project. I even was able to take a course on styling, FM228, which is my dream job. In this course, I was assigned a project where I would gather pieces of clothing for a celebrity and act as a stylist, which was fun. Overall, I took several courses while attending the Fashion Institute of Technology that will stick with me forever. I am so happy I completed this visiting program and can not wait to take the knowledge gained from UD and FIT in the real world when I begin my career.
