FASH419 was a course that focused on the social psychology of fashion and the reasons behind why people purchase some of the items they do. I loved this course because it was very different from my usual fashion courses. Many of my fashion courses taught me several important retail skills and strategies that are used when working in any field within fashion. I had many projects that required me to create a tech pack, brand, or section in a store based on the knowledge we learned in class. This course dug deep into why consumers shopped for clothing and studied appearances. In this course, I had to look at various research experiments that studied different factors relating to the social psychology of fashion. It allowed me to see the many different factors that people consider when deciding on how they want to present themselves and why. I had a project that allowed me and my group to study how social media can affect people differently and shape how they showcase themselves online. This project allowed me to gain useful insight into the effects social media has on people and how these effects vary per person. Overall, I learned useful knowledge in this course and it allowed me to understand how things can affect people differently and cause them to dress differently.
FASH420 was an assortment planning, sourcing, and buying course. In this course, I was able to learn how it felt to be a buyer for a store. There was an emphasis on assortment planning and purchasing in this particular class as I completed a big project as a buyer for the infants’ section of a store and had to create a merchandise plan. This course frightened me at first because it included many fashion formulas that I had to ensure I understood to complete multiple assignments in this course. I also had to complete a lot of research on future trends for seasons and add some creativity to my projects. Overall, I left this course feeling very accomplished with the work I completed. I gained a lot of great skillsets that I am sure I will use in my future career within the fashion industry.
FASH490 was one of the most rewarding classes I have taken. I say this because this course allowed me to see how much I have grown throughout my time at UD and showed me that I truly have learned a lot of great material. I could write for days about how much this course has helped me be more confident in the skills I have. This particular course was strictly project base and required me to use the knowledge I have gained about fashion in my four years of college, but creatively apply them. In the beginning, this course frightened me because I was unsure of my ability to perform well in each project. There were times I felt I had little to no time to work on some projects, but this course taught me how to get things done efficiently in a short amount of time. I always had been a person that felt I needed a lot of time to create an efficient project, though I have learned that this is not the case. This was a big lesson for me because, in the fashion world, I am sure there will be times where I will be under a time constraint to work on certain projects and now I feel confident that I will do so just fine. As stated, I could write for days about all the great knowledge about myself I was able to gain through this course. Overall, I will say that FASH490 has allowed me to trust my work and skills and has shown me that I am ready for any task that comes my way in the fashion world and my personal life.
