A solar farm is a collection of photovoltaic panels used to produce electricity from sun light. Solar farms can vary in size from a few panels to hundreds of panels depending on the energy need of the community or company it is serving.
Solar farms function by generating energy from the sunlight that is collected by the photovoltaic panels and distributing that power in the energy grid of the community in which the farm is located. The local electric company is in charge of the distribution of this energy, unless it is a community solar farm, in which individuals can purchase or lease panels⁸. When purchasing from an electric company, customers typically have the option of receiving their energy from renewable sources, for an additional cost.
The State of Delaware passed Senate Bill 33⁷, which modified the Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards Act. The Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards Act outlined the standards that will be followed in the implementation of renewable energy resources throughout Delaware in the upcoming years. The main adjustment Senate Bill 33 proposed was increasing the minimum required percentage of sales by electric companies that use renewable energy sources through 2035.

The installation of a solar farm will improve sustainability by utilizing renewable resources to produce energy. The use of renewable sources minimizes carbon emissions while providing a minimal impact on the surrounding environment. Solar farm implementation can be created to work in companion with natural habitats since its implementation requires minimal disturbances to the surrounding environment³. For example, native flowers can be planted on the project site to aid in increasing the population of pollinators. Additionally, the installation of a solar farm can lead to a reduced cost for purchasing energy⁴ which will provide economic relief for local families and businesses.
