In a community solar program, a third party entity owns and operates a solar farm and sells all or a portion of the energy produced to multiple consumers. The subscribers opt in to using solar energy by paying for a subscription either up-front or monthly. They receive a credit on their regular electric bill for being a part of the clean electric program.⁴
The University of Delaware has an agreement with the City of Newark prohibiting UD from producing more than 5MW of power. The University cannot be considered a Utility Company, so any additional solar added must be used directly by the University, rather than being sold back to the grid, and must be under 5MW of power. Because of this agreement, the University is not an ideal location for community solar. However, we can add a solar farm to the campus to improve our sustainability ratings and reduce our carbon footprint.
