The safety and security of all UC San Diego affiliates is our highest priority. At night, we urge you to take extra precautions to help ensure that you remain safe. Please see the safety and security tips and resources below from the Police Department and Transportation Services.
Practice situational awareness: Do not wear headphones and always be aware of your surroundings.
Call (858) 534-9255 to request a safe walk home from a Community Service Official.
Use the blue Call Boxes across campus for a direct emergency line to campus police dispatch.
Walk on lighted pathways and in areas that are traveled by other people for highest visibility. Travel in groups when possible.
Wear light colors and reflective vests or arm bands to be seen by motorists and others.
Triton Transit On-Demand is open to our La Jolla campus community and transports passengers between Triton Transit shuttle stops on weeknights from 10 p.m. to midnight. Request rides through the Triton Mobility Web App or download the Triton Mobility app from the Google Play or Apple App stores.
Call or text 911 in case of emergencies. Contact (858) 534-4357 (HELP) or email askacop@ucsd.edu to report unsafe conditions or receive non-emergency assistance.
Parking and Commuter Services has sponsored Enterprise CarShare membership for all current students, faculty and staff. Enterprise CarShare will provide campus residents and transit commuters the opportunity to rent vehicles from pods throughout the campus at low hourly rates that include fuel, mileage and damage/liability protection. Learn more about how the program works.
To activate your membership, you'll need your driver's license and credit card information. Once you're approved, you'll receive an email with login instructions for the mobile app and website. Members can reserve a car on the mobile app, online or by phone, (877) 599-3227.
Enterprise CarShare replaces the Zipcar program on the UC San Diego campus. Current Zipcar members will continue to find cars available throughout the San Diego region.
Triton Alert Emergency Notification System
The UC San Diego Triton Alert emergency notification system uses a phone and email notification system to keep the campus community updated in emergency situations. These communications are carried out through the use of e-mail and SMS (text messaging). Student, Staff, Faculty, Affiliates, and Community Members can sign-up for Triton Alerts. For more information, visit the Triton Alert Emergency Notification website.
When riding micromobility devices (e.g., bicycles, e-bicycles, scooters, e-scooters, one-wheels and skateboards), it is essential to follow the guidance below to help keep yourself and others safe. You can read more about safety recommendations in our Bicycle, Scooter and Skateboard guidelines.
Pedestrian Guidance
Never walk on micromobility paths.
Be aware of your surroundings, particularly when crossing micromobility paths.
Ride Micromobility Devices Responsibly and Safely
Use micromobility paths or lanes and do not ride on sidewalks.
Obey traffic signals and signage. Do not ride in restricted areas or during restricted times.
Slow or dismount around pedestrians and yield right of way to pedestrians.
Travel at a reasonable speed (8 mph) on shared-use paths and at or below 15 mph on campus roadways.
Do not use handheld electronic devices (e.g., cellular phones) while operating micromobility devices.
Do not use headphones or earbuds in both ears.
Two people should not ride on micromobility devices that are designed for one person.
Wear a helmet. UC San Diego affiliates can purchase a $10 Giro Isode MIPS or Quarter MIPS helmet from Campus Bike & Skate via Triton Commuter Club.
Protect Your Device
Register your ride with UC San Diego’s Bike Index account. Registration provides proof of ownership for device recovery and insurance. Bikes, scooters and other micromobility devices can be registered at no charge. As part of the registration process, take a photo of the device with serial number or other owner applied identifiers to share if the vehicle is taken.
Park and lock devices appropriately at racks and in enclosures. For added security, utilize the on-campus bike enclosures, HDH bike lockers, or MTS commuter lockers.
U-Lock it! Purchase a U-Lock for $10 through Triton Commuter Club.
Watch this micromobility safety and security video to see examples of best practices.
Report Suspicious Activity
Call or text 911 to report a potential theft in progress. Transportation Services and Spin provide a $100 reward for reports leading to arrests of micromobility thieves. File a report online if you have been the victim of theft of property worth less than $950.
Micromobility devices are subject to the same laws as vehicles on the road, per California Vehicle Codes and campus policy. If these laws, regulations and policies are not followed, you may be subject to citation.
