The supply of new geoscience graduates to the workforce does not meet current or future demands. Moreover, most STEM programs prepare students to become researchers at academic institutes while most geoscience jobs are not in academia or even in research and academia does not provide them the needed skills to work in the constantly evolving private sector. Specifically, more than 80% of bachelor’s and master’s graduates in the geosciences who participated in some form of internship during their education felt it was very important for their academic and professional development; yet, less than half of undergraduate geoscience majors participated in an internship-like experience.
Increasing the number and types of opportunities that provide individual undergraduate students with authentic, career-relevant experiences – across all employment sectors – may increase both student engagement and retention in the geoscience pipeline.
Reflecting the varied needs of the employment sectors and motivations of our student's professional careers, the internships available fall under multiple categories for a wide scope of development opportunities.
Please explore all options, some internships have components of multiple categories, but may be listed under one category.
GEOPATHS is partnering with a wide array of federal, state and local agencies, non-profits, education and private sector companies to provide a breadth of internship opportunities for our students.
Internships will be designed as 8 week, full-time paid commitments.
GEOInterns will meet in-person every Monday morning as a group, back at UCSC or via teleconferencing, to share their experiences with each other. After a community forming de-brief, professional development presentations will be arranged that highlight guest speakers representing different industries and work sectors and other topics based on students’ interests.
GEOInterns will reflect on their experience through a required reflection journal and a final analytical-reflective paper. Students will be encouraged to share their work experience as a poster presentation as part of the UCSC Undergraduate Research Symposium or in a professional meeting (AGU, GSA, AIPG) and will get assistance in preparing the posters as needed.
