Unveiling Opportunites for Social Transformation

What is the Right Livelihood College?

Right Livelihood Foundation

Education, financial and social support to change the world.

The RLC is a branch of the Right Livelihood Foundation. Together, they are committed to peace, justice & sustainability for all.

Hub for innovation

Everyday action matters.

The RLC holds multiple opportunities for undergrad, graduate and faculty engagement in both global and local social justice movements.

Community

We are a courage-powered community for social change.

The RLC is a community of change makers that gather to learn from, and support each other's work.

What was the problem?

A student-based organization with minimal student involvement.

Our Solution

Although a student-based organization, the Right Livelihood College (RLC) of UC Santa Cruz was facing minimal involvement from undergraduate students.

We revamped their original website to ensure the sustainability of its online presence and raise its awareness to the UCSC undergraduate student body. We hope this will help grow the community of the RLC at UC Santa Cruz to help support the mission of the Right Livelihood Foundation: uplifting global grassroot organizations.

" Because the site is in WordPress now we can 1) update it as the campus WCMS system migrates to WordPress, allowing us to use a wider diversity of plugins and 2) I can give other student leaders admin access to the site so that it can be updated more frequently while at the same time cultivating student leadership and ownership of the RLC at UCSC." - David Shaw, Project partner

User Test Analysis

"I like how the 'get involved" page is broken up- with links. it helps to realize that there are many smaller/independent opportunities for participation and involvement- instead of a general list. " - Sara Sadduk, UCSC undergrad student

Meet the team

Chelsea Contreras-Valencia (she/her/Ella)

As a Senior pursuing a B.S. in Human Biology with a minor in Global Information and Social Enterprise Studies, the values I have towards family have greatly influenced my goals and aspirations. My overall goal is to, directly and indirectly, support communities' work through epidemiological research and science communication.

Lessons Learned

Hands

The website builder WordPress was used as it is a reliable tool commonly used by many organizations. The Divi plug-in was used because its drag-and drop features helped learning how to build a website easier, good-looking, and sustainable.

Hearts

Due to the loss of Everett student partners throughout the project, our team collaboration was always evolving. I learned to be adaptable, improve my communication skills, and how to work within an organization's hierarchy.

Heads

I accepted the opportunity to work with this organization because I was excited about the foundation's partnership with universities across the globe. I had the opportunity to strengthen the partnership between the RLF and UCSC.
