I visited each second grade classroom to introduce myself to students and review my role as a School Counselor. This lesson emphasizes that my job is about helping them; and I can help through classroom lessons, small groups, individual counseling, and consulting with parents and teachers. We read the book Kindness is my Superpower by Alicia Ortego and developed a classroom list of how we would cultivate a community of kindness here at Marvin. To end the lesson, students completed a get-to-know you activity where we discussed current feelings surrounding the upcoming school year.
ASCA Behavior: B-SS 3- Positive relationships with adults to support success
October is anti-bullying month. During this lesson, students reviewed what bullying is and isn't using the MOOO acronym. Often times students refer to all perceived negative behaviors as bullying and it is very important that they understand the difference between someone being mean and bullying. We read the book One by Kathryn Otoshi which emphasizes the importance of being an upstander to bullying. Students then watched a video to encourage them to become an upstander and completed a drawing activity. It is important for students to understand that they can be a part of the solution to bullying at Marvin Elementary.
ASCA Behavior: B-SS 2: Positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with students who are similar to and different from them
This lesson teaches students the five strategies of how to best handle teasing. All students can identify a time someone teased them; whether that be a classmate or sibling. Rather than biting the hook, they learn to swim free. Students watched the videos from Grandma Rose's neighborhood educating them on the five strategies (ignore, agree, make a joke, distract or change the subject, or swim away).
In this lesson, students continued the discussion of the five best strategies to implement to handle teasing. Students participated in a role-play where they chose how they would react in different social situations. They then decided which two strategies they would try next time someone said a tease to them.
