I visited each fourth grade classroom to introduce myself to students and review my role as a School Counselor. This lesson emphasizes that my job is about helping them; and I can help through classroom lessons, small groups, individual counseling, and consulting with parents and teachers. We read the book A Little Spot of Kindness by Diane Alber and generated a list of ways to be kind in 1) the school, 2) at home, and 3) to adults. To end the lesson, students completed a get-to-know you activity where we discussed current feelings surrounding the upcoming school year.
ASCA Behavior: B-SS 3- Positive relationships with adults to support success
October is anti-bullying month. During this lesson, students reviewed what bullying is and isn't using the MOOO acronym. Often times students refer to all perceived negative behaviors as bullying and it is very important that they understand the difference between someone being mean and bullying. Students read the book My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig to become aware of all the possibilities of bullying. As a class, we reviewed tactics that can be implemented to reclaim power from our bullies. At the end of the lesson, students watched a video to encourage them to become an upstander when they are a witness to bullying. It is important for students to understand that they can be a part of the solution to bullying at Marvin Elementary.
