Eliminating Tracking and Math Pathways

Hamden Public Schools (PreK-12)

In order to modernize mathematical programming, Hamden Public Schools is working to emphasize what they are teaching and providing access to different opportunities. They want to begin shifting their mathematical content to incorporate more data science and analysis as well as embedding social justice standards. Currently, they are redesigning their pathways to increase opportunities. For example, they are de-leveling middle school grades and creating multiple pathways after Geometry. This way they are eliminating tracking at the earlier stages of mathematics in order to make math more equitable and prevent negative school environments. This way courses are not automatically seen as having lowered expectations and limiting to students who want to take rigorous mathematics. Now after Geometry, students can take a variety of courses that do not all lead to Calculus, but that provide a multitude of STEM opportunities, like Computer Science and classes offered at Gateway Community College.
