INQUIRY BASED LESSON
SNACK ATTACK BY TERRY BORDER
OPEN: What can you say about the book cover? What do you see in the picture?
IMMERSE: Ask students what snacks they brought to school today. Who prepared their snacks? Invite a local cook/chef to talk about how to prepare a dish.
EXPLORE: What are healthy and unhealthy food? Where does our food come from? Provide books on healthy and unhealthy food, farming, food factories, recipes, etc.
IDENTIFY: What do you want to know about food? Invite students to ask questions.
GATHER: Students will ask their family members and neighbors about their inquiry question. What did you find out? Draw pictures.
CREATE AND SHARE: Use ScratchJr to create a story or a game about what you have learned about food.
“ScratchJr is an introductory programming language that enables young children (ages 5-7) to create their own interactive stories and games. Children snap together graphical programming blocks to make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. Children can modify characters in the paint editor, add their own voices and sounds, even insert photos of themselves -- then use the programming blocks to make their characters come to life (https://www.scratchjr.org/about/info).”
EVALUATE: Were you able to answer your question? What else could you have done to better answer your question?
