What is it really like to run a business?

Job title: Upcountry Farm Shop Manager

  1. How did you get into helping to run this business?

I work for Friday Media Group who own many web-business and a garden centre. The owner of the business asked if I would like to set up a farm shop within Upcountry garden centre to provide a new attraction and experience for the customers to enjoy.

  1. Did you need any special qualifications, training or work experience and if so, what are they?

You don't need any specific qualifications, although I had experience in running a green grocery and a passion for promoting local food producers.


3. What would you say is the best part of your job?

Working with local food producers, creating wonderful food displays and seeing people. enjoying the products in our farm shop.

  1. What would you say is the worst part of the job?

If we have waste, food out of date and we have to throw it away.

  1. What would you advise someone who was hoping to one day, run or help to run a business?

I would advise for someone to run a business or work in a business, that you have a passion, or interest in.

  1. What is the hardest thing you have to do in your job?

Forecasting and budgeting. Also Buying stock can be a challenge, due to price changes and seasonality of produce.

  1. Would you recommend this job to young people? If so why and if not, why not?

I would recommend food retail to young people as a local independent, you can be creative. Using online and social media, you have the opportunity to promote your brand, attracted new customers and massively grow your business.
