Mrs Alvarez Runs for Mind

By Emily McHale

Mrs Alvarez will be attempting a world record to raise money for the charity MIND in August 2022. Her and her friend, Kate Bennet, have set themselves the task of running 874 miles from John O Groats (Scotland) to Lands End (Cornwall) over consecutive 13 days (approx. 67 miles per day). They will be running, jogging and walking for 16 hours a day, allowing only 8 hours for food, toilet breaks and sleep which will be particularly difficult because they will be handcuffed together by a chain that is only 20cm long.

This is all for a very good cause though! She hopes to raise £10,000 for the charity MIND, an amazing charity that provides support and advice for anyone experiencing mental health problems, and raise awareness of the challenges of mental health and the value of friendship, exercise and pursuing goals as ways of managing mental health issues and removing stigma.

They will be starting the world record attempt on 1st August 2022 but have already been running approximately 100 miles per week as part of training and have been entering ultras races every month to get used to running long distances in a single day. On some weekends, running as much as 36 consecutive miles (taking between 5 and 6 hours each day) to give them practise.

The task will certainly be a difficult one for anyone but is particularly impressive given the participants' own individual challenges. Mrs Alvarez comments about her world record that, “We are 2 ordinary women; me a 52 year old middle aged woman navigating my way through the hormonal changes of the menopause and Kate a 29 year old new mum tackling the challenges of motherhood. We hope to redefine what is possible and inspire others to do the same.”
