Our program is anchored by the work of Dr. Jaimie Cloud, founder of the
Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education.
Her Institue's mission is to "prepare school systems and their communities to educate for a sustainable future through meaningful content and learner-centered instruction." If you are a school or group looking to "sustainabalize" your programs or curriculum, Cloud is the gold standard.
SIXTH GRADE WHEEL (1 term, which is a quarter of a school year)
In addition to a Problem Based Learning experience, the students tend the Giving Garden, hang out with and snack up our chickens, visit the outside of our bee apiary, learn about the Three Pillars of Sustainability, and cook in our Seed-to-Table Kitchen. Because this is a 1 term class, outdoor experience varies with the weather.S
SUSTAINABILITY ONE (1 semester, which is half of a school year)
Sustainability I is a course for 7th and 8th graders, with opportunities to cook, garden, and more! During this semester-long course, students learn the principals of economics through hands-on activities, evaluate what they can do to make their lives more sustainable, and gain leadership skills.
SUSTAINABILITY TWO (1 semester, half of a year)
Sustainability Two builds on Sustainability One, and is a leadership and entrepreneurship course. Students in the fall design and manage the Brittany Brand Pop-Up Marketplace. In the spring, they organize Growing Together: UCity School's Food Garden Network plant give away and growing season kick-off. These students are also the main organizers of our Pollinator Squad. These are the students who may fully train as beekeepers and help beyond supervised hive inspections. The are also the "special forces" who go out in all weather to handle the jobs that need to be done.
