Project-based learning is Acacia's (she prefers to be called by her first name) passion, pride, joy, and expertise. One of your first assignments in ED 302 (taught by Acacia) is to collaborate with a partner outside of your content area to create a PBL unit and Google presentation on any topic of your choosing. For those who wish to get an early start on the reading, you may purchase the book on Amazon. The main chapters covered in class are chapters 1, 2, 3, and some of 5. There is a lot to process, but Acacia will heavily scaffold and provide examples, such as the ones below. Topics that candidates have chosen to study in the past include: Disney, Global Warming, Soccer, Boba Tea, Kanye West, Snacks, Books (i.e., To Kill a Mockingbird), Cosmetics, Netflix shows, SCOTUS, Batman, and the list goes on forever! You will have fun as you engage in critical thought, collaboration, and creative thinking. Enjoy! :)
*Check out some sample PBL projects below.
Dr. Bettina Love is a brilliant ed reform leader who has a talent for brining into crystal clear focus how real change can happen. She is an award-winning author and Professor at the University of Georgia. Click here to access the video. In this video clip, Dr. Love explains what is meant by the term "co-conspirator". The video is about six minutes in length. Please watch this video before we meet for orientation on Friday, June 18, 2021. We will explore the question, "What does it mean to take a risk in education and why does it matter?"
Dr. Roberto G. Gonzales is Professor of Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is also the Director of the Immigration Initiative at Harvard. His research examines the effects of legal contexts on the coming-of-age experiences of vulnerable and hard-to-reach immigrant youth populations. To deepen understanding about the lived experiences of undocumented students, UCI's MAT candidates read Lives in Limbo at the start of the program. Please watch this video before we meet for orientation on Friday, June 17, 2022.
All MAT courses will be in person on UCI's campus (with the exception of one or two classes for the 2022-2023 school year). Regarding Covid, we remain committed to following the policies set by the California governor, the California Teaching Commission (CTC), and UCI leadership.
Your summer course schedules will be sent to you via email by the end of April. If you have any questions or concerns about joining the MAT program, that is completely understandable. It is better to be honest with yourself before you commit your time and money. If you would like to discuss a possible deferral to the 2022-2023 school year, please send me an email and we can discuss your options. Welcome Anteaters!
