Worldbuilding is what we do now, we are considered worldbuilders and although it may just be in the form of creating digital archives and essays, it wasn't such an easy world for past worldbuilders. I am talking about the worldbuilders before us those who have now made it possible for us to feel at home or safe, whether that be through cultural services like the Latinx center, BSU, Asian Pacific Student Association and more or for our sexuality like the LGBTQ+ center or even simpler things such as the wellness center or the Fresh hub. The things that seem little to us are the biggest thing in making others feel at home. Even things such as recently in which worldbuilders created a better world for TAs so that their world could be a bit easier on them. Those are the true worldbuilders that have now allowed us to build our own little worlds without having to worry about much.
Each section is touches on a different issue or struggle that students had to deal with and fought for until UCI listened to them and changed. Issues such as housing inequality, LGBTQ+ issues, cultural issues, and more. They even have little things such as why our mascot is an anteater and the culture surrounding that now.
Exhibits such as the Anteater spirit: Student activism that shaped UCI, are reminders of the past and inform us that the resources some of us every day were once not provided and that students before us had to experience school life without the things that make us feel safe. This exhibit is currently being held at Langson library and has been running since last quarter and will be until mid-April. Showing off how worldbuilders built UCI into the world that we know today.
Without having these worldbuilders fight for these issues some of us wouldn't have a palace to call home or feel safe with us.
Things that relate to me
I am not that surprised items such as posters and flyers have been saved since it marked such a big monumental turning point for a lot of students and although it might not have seemed that important at the time to others, it definitely did for these students.
Most of them have the same goal of waiting to have a change
Take into account the lgbtq+ center and the Latinx center
LGBTQ+ center
Took 9 years in order to get approval for a space in the student center
Beforehand their only space was in a student center office and even then they experienced a hate crime of homophobic writing and threats left on door
this incident was a year prior before space was built for them, in turn leaving their members to not have safe space anymore and to this day no one has been caught for it
Present day
Now anyone can feel safer in the center knowing there is a safe space meant for students
I've personally been at the center and have had a tour and it is more than just a place to hang out with other LGBTQ+ folk. You get a space to study at, resources such as pride items but also things such as food or hygiene.
MEChA/cross cultural center
One of the founders of the cross cultural center
Is still a present club/organization
Has other minor groups under them such as the United Mexican American Students(UMAs)
has advocated for the expansion of the EOP program at UCI to allow more Chicanx students to be admitted with the help of financial aid, counseling, touring assistance, and more
Has held Cinco de Mayo celebrations since the 1980s
Participated in the first annual affirmative action conference at UC Berkeley. Due to how the affirmative action system was built it actually created administrative barriers and issues for students.
within this conference, all attendees would learn about the legal, organizational, and strategic applications
Present Day
This group still exists along with other groups and centers such as the LatinX Center which also holds weekly events and meetings relating to Hispanic issues regarding being first gen, mental health, or simply feeling more connected with ones culture
personally I have attended a few of their events and the best event so far has been the Dia De Los Muertos event and it was breathtaking. Hit me in the feels
Present + Past = knowledge
Why do we care enough to look back at the past and try to connect back to the present? well to simply put it, growth. we review primary sources from the past and try to compare them to our current life, but what even is a primary source?
A primary source is a first-person account of an event. They experienced or recorded history knowingly or unknowingly and can come in the form of an interview, picture, or an item
Primary sources are the literal reason why we know a lot of things to be true, they are in-person accounts of events that have happened in the past and whether they be in a picture format or written they are first-person accounts of what happened. Similar to a game of telephone you may get a general idea but sometimes you need the little details that seem unnecessary but can actually show a lot about the history
Besides our constant fascination with the past, there is validity in this weird fascination. Think of it as a progress checkmark in a game. you may fail multiple times, but you always start back on the checkmark and you take all of your past experiences to make sure the past doesn't repeat itself and focus on achieving an "ending". In the context of real life, I am not to sure what our "ending" is but I can only assume it is to better improve our decision in order to survive.
We can see this in the activist's history recorded here at UCI compared to the ones we have learned from Professor Robertson's lectures, fighting for what one belives is right, making a change for a certain oppressed group. Even if in the past there were more extreme measures, it created the basis for activism and teaching others to not stand down. we've learned that words can not always solve issues, but actions say a million.
Why must we have a separate world created? why can't we all live under one world? well, it’s not that simple. Just because a plant is a plant it doesn't mean it can survive in another plant’s location. The same goes for humans, genetically speaking we are the same, but we are all raised and grew up in different environments. Which isn't bad but sometimes we just need that little space that makes us feel at home, for some that may be a religious group setting, a cultural setting, or just simple acts of necessity such as the Wellness Center or the Women's Center. We all need different things, but they can't all be under one thing which is why we fight for those things to be included. Though it can't be under the same building we can share a space, that space being UCI. We all deserve a safe place in order to thrive and grow into the best person we can be and sometimes this requires us to face adversity in order to make sure that others in the future can grow in peace and be the best they could be.
