I have chosen to have my primary source for this project to be the story of Lac Long Quan. And I think I would like to look at this source from more of a social science persepctive.
I'm interested in the way the story has been shaped by Vietnamese society and culture. This story started out as an oral tradition and was officially written down back in the 14th-15th century during the Le dynasty in Vietnam.
This is a story that has persisted throughout time, and even now, is still taught to children at the primary level and secondary level in Vietnam.
I think one possible question to ask this source is- what about it is so appealing to those in the Vietnamese culture that they keep on teaching this story? What does this story offer?
Another question might be- how does the story enforce or embellish certain characteristics that the Vietnamese culture finds important? How are these cultural values represented or reflected in the story?
So far, the secondary sources that I have found have been really helpful. There have been a few that talk directly about my primary source, but they go about it in a different way- there was one talking about the impact of the story one children, and there was one talking about the symbolism behind dragons.
The secondary sources have been really good to read through and find things that may help me during my own analysis.
I really only have to find a few more secondary sources and I should be able to finish up on those, at least until I think I need some more later on during project.
One thing I am worried about is, while doing my analysis, I might derail from what my research question intially was.
But so far, this has been pretty fun- looking for sources, looking for supporting evidence, doing my own analysis. I think I might be able to enjoy what my end project is going to be like.
