Start off by doing surface survey on foot across the site, using a metal detector, or researching and make deductions on where artifacts may be abundant.

Test your theories with shovel test pits, open trenches, etc to be added.

Document your findings in your field notebook, take notes, or make sketches and scale drawings of your trench.
