Item 34: The Rubiks Cube!
In this display are artifacts selected to represent the findings from the I Dig UCI project’s archaeological research at the Bonita Camp/Farm School site adjacent to the Anteater Recreation Center (ARC), here on UCI’s campus. As part of Anthro 148 students participate in the discovery and preservation of artifacts from archaeological survey and excavation work done at this former outpost of the Irvine Ranch, where three buildings still remain - the oldest on campus - dating to as early as the 1920s. This display seeks to share both the findings and experiences that students have encountered as part of their training in archaeological field methods. These artifacts create a tangible connection to the ways in which forms of occupation have happened at this site which is now part of the UCI campus, an intrusion into the ancestral lands of local indigenous communities since time immemorial. Each shelf portrays different stages of settler use of the site both before and after its incorporation as part of major R1 university landscape. These finds offer insights into the activities of the Irvine Ranch, the pedagogical and research initiatives of UCI’s School of Social Sciences, and, ultimately, the development of today’s East Campus, with the ARC as its anchor. Such artifacts bear witness to, and allow us to reflect on, the forms of occupation and land stewardship that have so dramatically transformed Irvine and Orange County since the early 20th century.
