Agents in Training
I Dig UCI opportunities come in various shapes and sizes, from internships and independent study, to specific course offerings that are projec- based ways to engage with the archaeological record of campus. Project staff can also provide site tours to campus and outside groups and introductions to our study collections.
Usually offered in the Fall quarter, this is the training course for new I Dig UCI agents who want to get experience as part of a campus-based archaeology project. Students will complete 120 hours of hands-on field and laboratory work across the following domains:
40 hours Excavation Training
stratigraphic analysis and profile drawings
Shovel Test Pits (STPs)
Archaeological drawing (top plans)
Laying out excavation units
Excavation techniques with standard tools
Data recording in field forms
20 Hours Survey Training
landscape archaeology
Transects, sighting compass, map orientation, basic geoarchaeology
Site formation and hydrology
Field walking including ecological identification
20 Hours Archival Training
Working with digital databases as research tools (maps, imagery, reports, etc.)
Understanding paper documentation of older excavations and unpublished reports, forms, etc.
Digital Scholarship and web archiving of excavation documents (notes, forms, plans, etc.)
Using archives and special collections for research
20 Hours Collection Management Training
Basic Artifact conservation, storage, and handling
Finds data entry
Photography and ceramic drawing
Artifact identification, classification, and analysis
Exhibition design, labelling, and preparation
20 hours General CRM training
Understanding EIRs, LRDPs, and mitigation reports connected to development projects
Field project logistics
NAGPRA; CEQA; and other legal/ethical frameworks for archaeological fieldwork and collections
Report writing and developing content for public facing digital platforms
