Addressing Safety and Accessibility of Active Transportation Pathway Infrastructure through Remote-Sensing Data and Modelling

This project utilizes LiDAR technology to enhance the design and development of Edmonton's active transportation infrastructure, specifically sidewalks and shared-use paths, with an emphasis on safety, equity, and accessibility. LiDAR provides efficient solution by generating highly accurate digital models of existing infrastructure, enabling quicker, data-driven improvements.

Key technological objectives include:  

1. LiDAR Scanning to create digital models of selected sidewalks and bike paths. 

2. Employing machine learning to automate the identification of infrastructure features. 

3. Streamlining and automating accessibility assessments for infrastructure redesign.

4. Establishing a prioritization framework to assist decision-makers in focusing on improvements that enhance safety, equity, and accessibility.
