Wildfires pose significant threats to Alberta’s real estate and the safety of its residents. This project will create a conceptual framework, conduct empirical assessments of existing neighbourhoods, and create practice-oriented recommendations for developing resilient communities that help protect people and property in wildfires. By focusing on the unique connections between transportation and land use, this research is a critical step in establishing fire-resilient communities and neighbourhoods across Alberta.
Using a multi-method approach from a diverse team of engineers and urban planners at the University of Alberta, the objectives are to: 1) identify and assess strategies, designs, and planning that would ensure safe and resilient transportation in fire-prone communities; and 2) maintain the viability, protection, and value of current built environments in wildfire-prone areas
