Vision-Based Framework for Estimating Effective On-Street Parking Utilization Rates using Multi-Sensor Data Fusion
Marina’s thesis develops an automated framework for estimating effective parking length and occupancy. The framework comprises multiple workflows that incorporate object detection, instance segmentation, GPS and IMU alignment, pixel-to-meter conversion, GIS processing, statistical analyses, and explainable artificial intelligence methods. Vehicle-mounted video was used to detect parked vehicles and curbside infrastructure, align detections to roadway segments, estimate usable curb length, and calculate occupancy based on effective parking supply rather than total street length alone. Ultimately, she developed a scalable method for municipal curbside inventorying and effective parking occupancy estimation. Her proposed framework provides a foundation for more data-driven curbside management and supports future applications in parking policy, curbside allocation, and automated monitoring.
