------------------------------------------------------

The Sweetgrass Bear was created by world renowned stone sculptor, Stewart Steinhauer, of Saddle Lake First Nation. The Sweetgrass Bear is part of the university’s efforts to work toward respectful, meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. It is part of a larger Provost’s Office initiative to acquire Indigenous art, which seeks to diversify cultural representation on campus. The bear is the first of four instalments in the initiative. The Bear was unveiled after a pipe ceremony on August 30, 2016.

------------------------------------------------------

Some people view this bear as a beautiful and meaningful symbol of new relationships between the University of Alberta and Aboriginal peoples.

---------------------------------------------------------

Some people view the installation of the bear as a way for the University of Alberta to "check off" its "reconciliation box". Allowing the University to get off the hook without attempting to create tangible efforts to address the systemic racism that is built into the institution.
