About
This website, in combination with the Google Maps application above, have been created to highlight Indigenous, or perceived Indigenous places, spaces & art located on the University of Alberta North Campus. The website is home to a hub of alternative perspectives around Indigenous or perceived Indigenous statutes, artwork, places & spaces at the University of Alberta.
Our understanding of place is strongly influenced by maps. This project encourages both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people to engage in shifting the discourse around place names at the UAlberta North Campus, while centering Indigenous voices and stories that have been here since time immemorial. The campus community and general public are encouraged to share their stories about the sites, which can be posted on the website. This will facilitate community driven dialogue and additional context about spaces, places, and names on campus.
The featured places, spaces, and art are located all over campus, but are usually hidden in plain sight. Many people do not know these spaces exist. If people do know about the spaces, there is often no understanding, or a misunderstanding of what the space actually represents. This website and walking tour map application aim to fill this gap, providing context to Indigenous, Indigenous Named, Problematic, Relation Building and Colonial spaces, places, statues, installments and art on the UAlberta Campus.
