After arriving in Canada and receiving a study permit you must obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN). This is a government-issued number that is legally required to receive your pay as a student.
Your SIN is also used for filing a tax return and claiming a Goods and Services Tax refund.
The fastest way to do this is to present your study permit in person at a Service Canada office. The closest location to the University of Alberta is Canada Place.
Once you have received your SIN, please provide a copy to the MatCH Administrator (match@ualberta.ca) so that your records can updated with Human Resources.
You will need to also set up a bank account as all student stipends are paid by direct deposit into your bank account. See information regarding a bank account under the Financial tab.
