The Office of Lifelong Learning is a novel vision for continuing medical education and professional development at the University of Alberta. We operate as a medical education "hub"—where health professionals and teams at all levels can land to find information on continuing medical education and opportunities for professional development.
One innovation is through our Physician Learning Program, which engages, educates and empowers physicians and teams to create and sustain local solutions to advance clinical practice. We believe that linking learning to practice is the most effective form of Lifelong Learning.
Dr. Denise Campbell-Scherer completed Medical School at the University of Toronto in 2000 and her residency in family medicine at McMaster University. She has worked in rural Northern Canada, the University of Michigan, and the University of Alberta as a family physician, with extensive experience in residency education. With a background in evidence-based clinical practice, she has been active internationally in education of multidisciplinary learners and is an Associate Editor of BMJ, Evidence-Based Medicine.
Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and the Associate Dean of the Physician Learning and Lifelong Learning Program at the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on how to improve the primary care of people with obesity and how to translate evidence into practice. She heads an interdisciplinary research team, and is a co-lead and co-investigator on several large national and provincial research grants.
