Research Unit of Local Planning - IFOER
Research, planning and teaching at the Institute of Spatial Planning (TU Wien) consider space in its manifold physical, relational, geographic, economic, cultural and social dimensions. Interdisciplinary, cooperation, practical planning and decision making based on sound theoretical research, and the accumulation of planning knowledge, including the involvement of stakeholders -these are all essential characteristics of the Institute of Spatial Planning. These aspirations materialize in the disciplinary approaches that constitute research and teaching at the Institute: Besides "classical" realms of planning such as local and regional planning and development, disciplines include spatial and technology-related fields in law and legal studies, social sciences, economics, transportation and mobility planning, computer sciences, and cultural studies. The Institute has set itself the goal of developing centres of competence in specific planning-related research issues in cooperation with other university institutions, public administrative bodies and private sector organisations. These centres of competence are to achieve visibility and importance both within Austria and beyond the national borders.
IFOER’s research focuses on municipalities. Despite their varying complexity and structure, their size, situation in space and different spatial contexts, are the Research Unit’s “research labs”. Their diverse spatial contexts and different inter-communal and regional references lead to a particular differentiation of the issue. Local planning covers the following (sometimes thematically overlapping) fields of action, in the combination with the respective theoretical and metrological planning basis: local authority development planning, municipal planning, urban planning and urban development planning, local development, village and urban regeneration, neighborhood planning, zoning and land-use planning, urban design and inter-communal spatial design and development.
