Week 14

Coming Full Circle —

What is the Purpose of Education?

We will complete the end-of-course survey.

We will complete the self-evaluation/reflection.

EDUC 235 and the 2024 Presidential Election: Given that the US has a public educational system, most presidential candidates run on some sort of education platform. Having now taken EDUC 235, you are all more informed about education policy than the average voter in the U.S. I hope you use this knowledge to vote for candidates who will further ideas you believe in! To solidify your newfound expertise, let's connect what we've learned about in class to the 2024 presidential candidates.

1. For a primer on ed policy and our two-party system (Democrats/Republicans), read about how the two main parties tend to think about K-12 education.

After each of the following steps, take note of your reactions and any connections you see between the policy platforms and EDUC 235 on our final JAMBOARD!

2. President Biden is running for re-election on the idea that he will continue to build what he has started during his first term. Read about what the Biden administration hails as their key education-related accomplishments.

3. Watch and read about key moments in a recent Republican debate to learn how leading Republican candidates frame their education platforms.

4. Although Former President Trump has not been present at the debates, he is also running for re-election and is currently the frontrunner (not only amongst Republicans but also to win the election). Watch and read about Trump's education platform.

5. If time, explore other top candidates -- Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy.
