The BOBBStopper is a simple yet effective design for our user. The BOBBStopper can fit in any typical pot, mug, or cup that the user would wish to fill. The bobber is used as a visual notification for the user to know when to stop pouring the desired liquid.
Figure 1. The BobbStopper
The product is first placed into the desired pot or cup with the required height already adjusted. When the user begins to pour the liquid into the vessel the bobber will start to float while the weight stays on the bottom. The bobber will naturally float sideways when the line is loose. As the line gets more taught the bobber begins to float more upright. This upright bobber notifies the user to stop filling the pot or cup. Finally the user will extract the product and finish cooking.
Figure 3. Initial Design Diagram
This first design implemented bobber stoppers on the bottom and top of the bobber. We thought the bobber stoppers would be difficult to adjust with one hand. Also, the material of the bobber stopper did not seem reliable in hot liquids.
Figure 4. Final Design Diagram
The modified and final design implements an alligator clip and the bobber at a pinned position. As a team, we thought the alligator clip was the better than the bobber stoppers because it was food safe and, in the user observation, our user was able to use the alligator clip with ease.
Material - Nylon
Length - 24"
50 lb. test
The fishing line's purpose in this design is to connect the bobber to the weight. The line also keeps the bobber in place with nots above and below the bobber. The choice for nylon material over other materials was important because other plastics in fishing lines are not resistant to cooking temperatures and can become toxic when cooked with while nylon is a good substitute material in cooking.

Material - Balsa Wood
Length - 3.15"
Painted Surface
The bobber is what makes this design. The bobber is a slip bobber which is different than a typical bobber because the line goes through the entire bobber. Due to its shape the bobber is able to lay horizontally and vertically. This shape is how the design notifies the user. The material of the bobber is wood instead of plastic to prevent any problems with hot liquids.
Figure 6. Bobber
Material - Stainless Steel
Size - 2" diameter
- 0.5" thick
0.1" d. hole (in center)
The weight made entirely from stainless steel. This material is a typical cooking material used in most pots and pans. The weight is heavy enough to weigh down the bobber but light enough for the user to pick up and carry.
Figure 7. Stainless Steel Weight
Material - Stainless Steel
Length - 1 31/32"
The alligator clip keeps the weight in place. The clip makes it easy to adjust the height of the desired fluid. All the user needs to do unclip it from the string and put it at the new height. The alligator clip and the spring inside it are also stainless steel which makes it safe for cooking.
