Our design involves a bobber, a piece of fishing line, a stainless steel weight, and an alligator clip. The bobber is tied to the fishing line so it will not move. The stainless steel weight is held in place because it will be resting on an alligator clip that is clipped to the line. The components will work together so that the bobber rises with the water level until it reaches the desired level. The alligator clip helps Gregory adjust the placement of the weight on the line so that the length of the line between the bobber and the weight can be adjusted. This allows the BobbStopper to be used with small mugs and large pots. The weight and alligator clip are made out of stainless steel so that they can be food safe and last in hot and cold liquids. The nylon string and the bobber can also be in liquids of different temperatures.
The idea behind this design is focused primarily on the bobber. As the user is pouring liquid into a container, the bobber will lay sideways. When the liquid reaches the desired level, the bobber will flip upright and only the top half will be visible above the liquid. Additionally, the alligator clip allows the user to change the height of the device based on the size of the container being used.
Find and mark the center of the stainless steel weight. Since the diameter of the weight is two inches, you can measure 1 inch from each side of the circular top of the disc.
Figure 24. Directions Step 1
Using a drill press and a drill bit with a 0.1 inch diameter, drill a hole into the center of the stainless steel weight. Drill entirely through the stainless steel weight (0.5 inches).
Figure 25. Directions Step 2
Cut a piece of nylon fishing line that is 24 inches long.
Figure 26. Directions Step 3
Thread the fishing line through the bobber from the top of the line, starting with the brown end of the bobber. The orange side of the bobber should be closer to the top of the fishing line.
Figure 27. Directions Step 4
Keep the bobber at least 6 inches below the top of the fishing line. Tie a knot that is 5 inches below the top of the fishing line.
Figure 28. Directions Step 5
Move the bobber up on the line so that it cannot move upward anymore. Then, tie a knot right below the brown part of the bobber so that it stays in place and can no longer move on the line.
Figure 29. Directions Step 6
Thread the fishing line through the stainless steel weight from the bottom of the fishing line.
Figure 30. Directions Step 7
Keep the weight at least 6 inches from the bottom. Tie a knot that is 4.8 inches above the bottom of the fishing line.
Figure 31. Directions Step 8
The design is ready to use. The standard version of the design is meant for Gregory’s tallest pots. Keep the alligator clip handy so that it can adjust the BobbStopper when using it in smaller containers.
