This page reflects my current understanding and in-progress exploration of Project-Based Learning.
What I'm excited about when it comes to PBL is to get students excited about learning. Often, I see students' attitudes towards learning as something they don't care much about. I can remember feeling that way in school myself, complaining to teachers that I'm never going to need to know something like the Pythagorean theorem in the real world; and sorry Mrs. Hoester, I was right. Being that PBL is mostly driven by a student's interest to problem solve real-world challenges, it will make it so that they will need these skills in the future because they will be transferable 21st-century skills.
As far as concerns go, I have a few. First off, I wondering how much planning time this will take on the teacher (facilitator) end. Will it be more at the beginning, but then the responsibility will be transferred to students? Second, is student attendance. There has been a drastic drop and inconsistency since Covid. I'm hoping that PBL will make it so that student learning can still happen anywhere at any time. Lastly, is student effort. I'm hoping PBL will help engagement and create more buy-in. Based on what I've researched so far, it looks like this is the highlight. Not every student learns the same way, so maybe with this approach, it will create opportunities for more students to shine and thrive.
