The journey map is a visual narrative that follows the learning process of Rosie, an eager child who sets out to learn the complex skill of juggling. The map is laid out as a linear progression of steps, each accompanied by corresponding emotions, thoughts, and spoken words, which together paint a vivid picture of her learning experience.
In this journey mapping project, I partnered with my 11-year-old daughter to explore the learning process of a challenging skill - juggling. The aim was to apply journey mapping techniques to a real-world learning experience, providing insights into the learner's thoughts, feelings, and actions.
The process began with a simple exercise: recalling a recent learning challenge. We zeroed in on her attempts to learn juggling, a task she had undertaken a few days prior. The first step involved her jotting down the steps she took in learning to juggle. Following this, I conducted an in-depth interview to delve deeper into her experience. This interview allowed me to add detail and explore her mental and emotional journey during the learning process.
Having witnessed the learning experience firsthand, I was able to prompt and probe based on my observations, enriching the data collected. Despite her initial surprise at the level of detail sought, the thoroughness of the inquiry proved beneficial. I recorded the findings in a Google Doc, elaborating on her handwritten notes.
The final step involved transferring these detailed notes to a journey map template in Miro. This map not only chronicled the physical steps of learning to juggle but also captured the emotional highs and lows, symbolized through the use of emojis. Upon reviewing the completed journey map, my daughter confirmed its accuracy in reflecting her experience, particularly appreciating the emoji representations of her emotions throughout the learning process.
This project demonstrates the use of journey mapping in understanding and visualizing complex learning experiences. It offers a comprehensive view that combines the practical steps of learning a new skill with the emotional and cognitive experiences of the learner.
