Our design called for 2x2's, a 2x4, and plywood as the main materials for construction. We cut these down to size using a miter saw and a table saw. Other materials that were purchased from the beginning include carpet adhesive, wood stain, and metal brackets.

We began by building the plywood frame - this was done by drilling screws through the plywood into the 2x2’s on the other side. One setback during this process was the realization that some of our 2x2's were cut too short. We decided to buy an additional 2x2 out of pocket and cut pieces that were closer to the dimensions we needed.

Because the plywood is so thin, we had to cut small 2 x 2 pieces for the screws to go through when putting on the hinges. These are found on the inside of the compartment and on the interior of the panel between the steps.

Staining & Carpeting

A dark "walnut" colored stain was used on the exterior and interior on all panels that were not about to be carpeted. Luckily the small can of stain was just enough to cover the area we needed. The carpet was thin and pliable, which made folding the carpet over the corners an easy task. Trimming the carpet to exactly the right dimensions was somewhat tricky, as we only had a box cutter available. After these steps were completed, our group just had to let the stain and carpet glue dry.
