JANEAL GROSINGER - EDTECH 542
Quilts have a personal meaning to people throughout history dating back to Medieval Times. Quilts have been around in the United States through Colonial times, the Great Depression, and the 21st Century. They have played an important role in many cultures.
In this lesson, we will have fourth-grade students use quilting in Math to learn fractions and geometry. Along the way, cross-curricular trips will venture into:
Fine Arts where we will help students learn about the color wheel and identify key points in a work of art.
Language Arts will help them connect their quilts to stories about quiltmaking and how it is an important part of history.
Social Studies/History will be included to help students learn about how quilts were important to several cultures throughout American history.
Technology will be used throughout the project to research design options that align with technology, to research history of the quilt throughout American life, to display the progress of their work, and to collaborate with peers.
Teachers:
Question: How can we connect history, math, language arts, and the fine arts into a visually pleasing masterpiece that tells our own story?
This Project-Based Learning (PBL) lesson will provide you the lesson plans, recommendations for assessments, project timelines, tools and resources, and connections to learning standards and student guides.
