Fourth grade students will use quilt-making to learn about geometry and fractions. Additionally, the lesson will engage cross-curricular lessons plans that include language arts and visual arts to develop deep critical thinking skills, student choice, and reflection.
How can we connect history, math, language arts, and the fine arts into a visually pleasing masterpiece that tells our own story?
How can we create a colorful quilt pattern that will artistically display geometric shapes that reflect our culture?
What is the definition of culture?
How do cultures differ in our community?
Can you define your culture through food, holidays, colors, or family activities?
What family traditions define you?
What geometric shapes do you see in quilt samples?
How can fractions be used to add contrasting colors to your design?
How can you use fractions to divide one shape into other shapes?
Why is understanding geometric transformations important in quiltmaking?
How can we use the color wheel to create a pleasing design?
What famous quilt did Betsy Ross create? What geometric shapes do we see in it and what was the quilt used for?
Can mixing patterned fabric with solid color fabric help to define cultural traditions within a quilt?

Problem-solving
Used in the quilt design to create a pattern that connects several geometric shapes and parts of shapes (fractions) into one cohesive design, as well as in the use of a sewing machine.Collaboration
Used throughout the lesson during peer-evaluations, working together to learn how to use a sewing machine, and in creating online drawing designs.Critical thinking
Uses throughout the lesson to create patterns, identify connections to culture, understanding geometry, and using a sewing machine correctly.Creativity
Used in creating the design in the online drawing program, and in the selection of fabric and colors for their quilt.Communication
Used in peer-evaluations, learning logs/journals, presentations of completed project, and reading the books.Technology Skills
Uses in online checklist, online learning log, online self-evaluation, online peer-evaluation, online drawing program, and final project presentation (student choice).Life Skills
Used in learning to use a sewing machine, in giving presentation in front of an audience, and in using technology for a variety of events.Growth Mindset (Tenacity)
Used in finding the determination to keep trying when having difficulties using a sewing machine. The timeline for this project is approximately two - three weeks
