JANEAL GROSINGER - EDTECH 542
The lesson includes students asking questions about themes associated with their culture. Students will gather data through online research of their culture and the history of quilts within their culture, through the video of quilts, through conversations with family members, through collaboration with peers, and lessons learned in geometry. Students are encourage to collaborate with other students or family members to find answers to their questions and help them develop ideas about how their quilt should look. Using evidence found through online images or family photos/icons/quilts, students will answer questions and create a unique pattern and colored quilt.
Students will use critical thinking skills to analyze the correct way to connect geometric shapes to create a visually appealing design that also shows fractions in the design.
The lesson includes learning about geometric shapes and fractions, the study of color and images associated with different cultures, the artistic differences of the color wheel, and the proper use of a sewing machine to create projects.
The lesson will conclude with each students making a small quilt that shows each of these lessons. Students will present their completed quilts along with an explanation of it either through a verbal presentation, a Powerpoint presentation, or a presentation of the student's choosing.
Students and teachers will use a variety of reflection methods throughout the lesson. Students will reflect on their family history and culture to help create ideas for their projects. Please click on the links below for examples of each.
Students will use the checklist and learning log every day and teachers will have access to this at the end of each day to help guide their instruction for the next day's lesson.
The product presentation and authentic product are summative assessments and will be completed at the end of the lesson.
Product Presentation - Rubric
Students will chose their own method of presentation. They may work together with a peer on the presentation or on their own. Examples of presentation they can choose from (but are not limited to) include PowerPoint presentation, video production, animation presentation, direct instruction presentation, or a game-show format. Within the presentation, students will answer the Driving question. They will also identify the steps taken in relation to art, history, and reading. Students will explain the reasons for the color and pattern of fabric chosen in their quilt design and how it relates to their culture, geometry, and fractions.
The students will present their final quilts and activities to the class at the end of the lesson. Once the presentations are complete, the quilts will be displayed in the hallways, along with a narrative, for all students of the school to view. An explanation of the connection to sewing, math, social studies, art, and culture will also be highlighted.
The major product of this lesson will be the completed quilt that includes fabric that shows colors or images of their culture sewn together in a geometric pattern. In their presentation, the students will explain how the colors and images of the fabric represent their culture and be able to identify the geometric shapes of the quilt.
